The Imperial Glee Club

Celebrating 97 Years of Fellowship and Service

Built upon the principles of fellowship and public service, the Imperial Glee Club of Logan, Utah, is one of the oldest independent and continuously performing male choruses in the western United States. Founded in 1916 by a small group of male singers in the Logan Sixth Ward, the Club has grown and maintained a membership of 20-30 men that hail from communities throughout Cache Valley. In the early days, membership in the Club was highly coveted and tightly controlled. Men spent years waiting for a Club member to move or to die in order for a spot to open up.

In 1925, the ‘Sixth Ward Glee Club,’ as it was first called, held a contest to rename the club. The winning entry was submitted by Ed Bailey, a member of the group’s First Tenor section. Since then, the club has been known as the ‘Imperial Glee Club.’  It is the goal of the members to foster and preserve four-part male vocal music. The club meets each Tuesday evening for practice and annually performs at 20-30 venues throughout Northern Utah and Southern Idaho.

Twice each year (in the springtime and during the Christmas season), the Imperial Glee Club performs public concerts in Logan. The club also performs for civic programs, patriotic gatherings, religious services, organizational parties and funerals. Because it is a service organization, its members accept as many invitations to serve as is possible.

From the outset, membership in the Club has been open to adult male singers who are capable of meeting its standards of musical quality and have shown a willingness to support its ideals of service and fellowship.

The Club has a large musical library consisting of over 400 pieces. During the 1920’s, the Imperial Glee Club adopted “The Lord is My Shepherd” as its theme song with which they close every concert. This special and unique arrangement was brought to the Club by Wesley W. Haws, an early member.

The club is a non-profit, self-supporting organization. Club expenses are paid from annual dues. Almost without exception, the club performs without payment. The Club has always been willing to participate in benefit concerts with all proceeds going to the sponsoring organization. Participation in the Club is by invitation and/or audition.
